Developing a Logo as an Instructional Technologists
Being asked to create a media product, more specifically to design a logo that is connected to my field or a personal brand. I am interested in getting better at infographics and flyers, but I chose the logo option as I have worked with developing a logo before. Years ago I had established an LLC - Sandbox Consultations and while working out the marketing for it, I had to design a logo for business cards and other "stuff". This was a time consuming process and I really did not think about the various elements that go into graphics, colors, symmetry, and fonts.
However, as I went through the videos this week, it reminded me of some hesitations I had previously encountered as I looked at and decided on several different concepts. Without understanding the basics of each of the elements of design, I was familiar with what worked well together regarding colors, size, fonts, and overall aesthetics of a product. Overall, I new what worked well together, but did not understand why. I will provide a brief overview of some of the multimedia elements provided in this weeks readings.
Multimedia Elements
There are various components that go into creating an appealing visual experience including, but not limited to, typography, color theory, and image composition. Following basic principles allows for a satisfying user experience.
Typography - The style or appearance of text or the art of working with text
Color Theory - The study of how colors work together to bring about changes in emotions and perception.
Image Creation - The way all the individual subjects within our frame come together to create a final product
Reflection
Personally, I like to keep things simple and to the point and this tends to guide my course design, assessments, and for this project, the development of a logo. I utilized the many resources provided to us but eventually landed at Vistaprint.com Browsing through the many options, after answering some basic questions, led to many hours of sampling and experimenting with various elements.
I experimented with various color schemes, object orientations, various shapes and positioning, as well as different fonts and sizes. I was looking for something that would convey my tendencies toward simplicity and straightforwardness. I found Color Theory to be the most impactful for this module's assignment, along with image composition and typography
Eventually, I settled on several different designs that appealed to me and then asked my daughters for their advice and they both chose different logos...not surprising. In the end I decided to move forward with a logo design with a clean layout, minimal text, and simple icons and shapes. The logo I chose can be seen above, while the alternatives are below. Again, I believe the design carries the same philosophy of my approach to teaching and learning...simple, concise, and effective.
