For the fourth article analysis, I took a different approach when learning more about the digital divide. Initially, I had pushed the article to the bottom of the stack, as I was looking for information related to academia and the impact of digital divide on student success. The idea of using a study from a journal titled: Health and Place. After reviewing the abstract and reading the introduction, I felt that it was applicable to building a foundation of knowledge for future projects.

Instead of focusing on education, this article looked to explore the ramifications of the digital divide on health during the Covid-19 pandemic. This particular study discusses the impact of digital exclusion and the rate of Covid-19. While at first, the two concepts may not seem related, but once you delve into the source of the issue it become clear. Those who do not have access to reliable and consistent internet access fall behind compared to those that do.

The study concluded that households without reliable high speed internet increasingly found themselves falling behind the plan to moving forward. There were multiple areas of which the authors concluded as to how the digital exclusion effected these populations. These areas included the limited ability of people to shelter in place and keep up with current information, the slow down of information and knowledge to isolated populations, access to treatment and vaccines, distorted perceptions, and finally the exacerbation of mental health issues due to social isolation.
The study concluded that the digital divide has become a prominent driver of social exclusion and inequalities during and post Covid-19 pandemic. To truly begin to understand the idea of the digital divide, we must begin to understand the broad range of its impact.
