The Digital Divide and Hispanic Serving Institutions

Adding to my current selection of articles on the digital divide has become a welcome challenge. Trying to find information that is current and relevant to my topic has forced me to become more intentional on how I search and what key words to use. The majority of the article located are decades old at this time (early 2000's) and do not reflect current trends. Articles that were previously selected needed to parsed through and determined if they would make the cut moving forward.

The second article digs deeper into the current research of the digital divide and underserved populations. The amount of research that focuses on higher education is not as robust relative to studies that focus on K-12 academics. This study in this article focused on Hispanic-Served Institutions (HSI) and higher education. The purpose of the study was to determine if those students at an HSI, were more effected by the digital divide and which specific problems they may have experienced. As most of the current information for higher education is based on national, research based institutions, or K-12 schools, the authors determined that there was more data needed to determine if the digital divide was as impactful as they believed it to be.

The study clearly defined the research question of whether undergraduates at an HSI with large numbers or low-income and first generation students had adequate device access and internet quality. Each section was labelled appropriately with details that outlined the steps and limitations of the study. The data collected from the study will provide my research with more up to date information and remain relevant for a longer period of time.
