Learning Theory Model - SAMR

I remember my first day of teaching in a college classroom as a part time instructor in 2005. I wanted to go in and make sure the students would remember my class. I wanted to do all sorts of things I had wished my instructors had done. Much of what I wanted to do was integrate better resources such as videos from YouTube and clips from movies and tv shows to provide better examples of concepts and ideas. However, much of what I wanted to do required time outside of the class and free time was something I did not have. I was forced to decide on what I wanted to use and not use to make the biggest impact on my students.

I understood that the use of technology in the classroom could benefit the student and increase success in the classroom (Terada, 2020). As my background is in Sociology, not Educational Theories, I was not familiar with the TPACK or SAMR frameworks. The SAMR model, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, was designed to assist teachers personalize instruction using technology (PowerSchool, 2022). You can find a brief overview of the SAMR model here - https://www.edutopia.org/article/powerful-model-understanding-good-tech-integration

The SAMR model outlines four tiers of integration based upon their levels of sophistication and ability to transform the experience in the classroom (Terada, 2020). I believe that many of us, if not all of us, are already utilizing the first two steps of Substitution and Augmentation by providing PDF copies of materials (substitution) and incorporating links to outside sources of information, such as a video or podcast, to better illustrate concepts and ideas (augmentation). However, the last two steps require a bit more effort and intention.

The final two steps include Modification and Redefinition and focus on the actual transformation of your instruction, and one must ask “Does technology actually enhance the task of learning?” Modification may entail using your LMS to provide students a space to collaborate in discussion and post online assignments, using the LMS to track grading, message students, and handle grading (Terada, 2020).

The Redefinition step encourages the instructor to imaging activities that were not previously attainable without the technology we have today (Fastiggi, 2022). This could be useful in a situation such as in Sociology when we discuss the differences between small town and large city ways of life. For instance, we can use Google Maps to walk through a small town, such as Alpine, TX, or walk through the streets Houston, TX and discuss the differences.

Overall, the SAMR Model is designed to move you forward as an instructor while improving your incorporation of technology into the classroom.
